Maui's dolphin is the rarest and smallest of all dolphins. It is only found off the west coast of New Zealand’s North Island. It measures just over a metre in length and weighs about 20kg. Compare this to the largest dolphin, the orca (commonly known as the killer whale), which can reach almost 8m in length and weigh over 860kg.

In May 2014, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) launched ‘The Last 55’ campaign as just 55 Maui's dolphins were believed to be alive.
