Meet Mr Bones

Meet Mr Bones

Barnum Brown was an American palaeontologist who went on to become one of the most famous fossil hunters of all time.

Barnum, born in Kansas, USA, in 1873, shot to fame when, at the age of 29, he discovered the first fossils of Tyrannosaurus rex in the US state of Wyoming.

21 years later, while on an expedition in Myanmar, then known as Burma, he struck bones again when he uncovered a fossil that was later identified as a new species of primate and the earliest known anthropoid (ape) in the world.

When Barnum Brown died just days before his 90th birthday, he left behind a wealth of fossils and discoveries that now occupy museums all over the world. He had certainly earned his nickname, 'Mr Bones'.
